Acrobatics should not be confused with gymnastics. Acrobatic dance not only includes training in strength, flexibility and body control, but also with coordination and acrobatic skills such as cartwheels, back bends, splits, etc. Like all other forms of dance, there is a certain foundation which must be mastered before advance training can be taken.
Ballet, the basis of all dancing, is a classical style with its own vocabulary. It requires concentrated and repetitive study and demands a high level of self-discipline. Poise, grace and coordination, along with music appreciation, are accomplished through proper ballet training.
We offer ballet classes for all ages and experience levels, including adults.
Creative Movement is for pre-schoolers ages 2 or 3-6, includes basic techniques in ballet, tap and/or acrobatics and consists of flexibility exercises, coordinating their bodies to music and learning novelty routines. Any of the above classes also helps increase gross motor skills. Creative movement can create new opportunities for successful learning. Early successes increase a child's confidence.
Contemporary blends elements from various styles of dance. It connects the mind and body to express emotion with breath and fluid movements. This style has been popularized by the hit TV series "So You Think You Can Dance".
Hip hop is an energetic form of street dance performed to hip hop music. The first and original dance associated with Hip Hop is break-dance. Newer styles are danced in an upright manner in contrast to break-dance with its many ground moves. There are many funk dance techniques that are encompassed in this style such as popping, locking, improvisation and krumping
Jazz is characterized by syncopated rhythms, intricate footwork and expressive body movements. It can be considered modern interpretation of ballet. Because of this, ballet is a pre-requisite of jazz. It is usually performed to but, not necessarily limited to the popular music of today.
Lyrical Dance is the personal expression of the choreographer to music with lyrics that expresses a strong emotional interpretation of the chosen song. Dancers use their bodies as well as facial movements to express the emotions of the lyrics and benefit from being emotionally connected to the music. Lyrical dance can convey a variety of emotions including sadness, joy, love, and pain.
*A student must be enrolled in a ballet class con-corrently in order to enroll in Lyrical.
Musical Theatre is a form of dance combining music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance. The emotional content of the piece – humor, love, anger – as well as the story itself, is communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.
Pointe is an advanced form of Ballet where the dancer supports themself on the tips of the toes in pointe shoes. Students should never be put en pointe without first mastering extensive ballet technique and skills and proper body control. Additionally, they should not be allowed to dance en Pointe before their bodies and muscles are fully developed.
Tap Dancing is the only type of dance that is native to America. It trains students in developing rhythm and coordination as well as teaching them to think and react spontaneously. With proper training, it is beneficial in developing creativity and musicality.
Tap 1 is for beginner level tappers and those moving up from our Creative Movement classes.
Tap 2 & 3 are for intermediate and advanced level tappers and by teacher recommendation.
Enjoyable, low key classes for adults who want the benefits of exercise through the art of dance. No experience necessary, all levels welcome!
